Founded in 1848, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, along with 13 other universities, is part of the University of Wisconsin system, one of the largest public higher education systems in the United States. With its 42,000 students, it is also one of the largest and most renowned public universities in the USA. The Visiting International Student Program (VISP) enables international students to study one or more semesters abroad at UW-Madison. Bachelor’s and master’s students can participate in all regular study programs.
Depending on availability, participants in the VISP program can specialize in an academic area (Thematic VISP Track) or combine subjects from different faculties (Traditional VISP Track). The VISP program offers an orientation session on site.

The official tuition fees for the undergraduate VISP with the 12 visa-related credits are actually higher than stated here. However, all undergraduate students who attend the Undergraduate VISP with College Contact will automatically receive a US$5,000 tuition reduction. This reduction has already been reflected in the fees above.
The same applies to Master’s students who want to take at least 12 credits in the Graduate VISP.
Due to visa requirements, however, only 8 credits are required in the master’s program in order to gain full-time status. Students who choose this option will receive a US$3000 discount , which is also included in the 8-credit fees above.

Financing options
Anyone who goes to UW-Madison for a semester abroad can apply for foreign BAföG, among other things. Eligible students receive a subsidy towards tuition fees of up to EUR 4600, a flat-rate travel allowance and a subsidy towards health insurance and living expenses.

Requirements
The Visiting International Student Program (VISP) at UW-Madison is aimed at bachelor’s and master’s students of all disciplines with good to very good academic achievements.
Bachelor students must have completed at least one semester at their home university. They must also have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or 4.0. A GPA of 3.0 corresponds to a 2.0 in the German grading system; a GPA of 4.0 corresponds to a 1.0.
Students who want to take part in the graduate courses must have completed a bachelor’s degree. You do not have to be enrolled in a master’s program at your home university.
A minimum score in a standardized language test such as the TOEFL or IELTS is mandatory for the program.
The language skills can be proven by one of the following test results or documents:

Campus
The University of Wisconsin-Madison sits on a promontory between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Because the campus is in the city of Madison, downtown and the campus merge together. In 2011, the UW-Madison campus was named one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States by Travel+Leisure.
There are various museums on campus, such as the Geology Museum, the Zoological Museum and the Physics Museum. UW-Madison owns the 12th largest research library in the United States. The campus features several National Historic Landmark buildings. The Bascom Hill Historic District contains some of the oldest buildings on campus. Numerous parks and cafés invite you to relax. The university has its own hospital, restaurants, sports facilities and a botanical garden. In addition, the largest university in the “Dairyland of America” has its own dairy.

UW-Madison offers international students a limited number of dorm rooms and on-campus apartments. Many exchange students live in private housing near UW-Madison. The Madison Friends of International Students also offer short-stay accommodation to exchange students.

Madison
The university town of Madison is a suitable choice for both nature lovers and city dwellers to complete a semester abroad. With a population of 252,551, Madison is the second largest city in the state of Wisconsin. The capital of the “cheese state” is often chosen as “one of the best places to live in the US”. Larger cities like Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis are easily accessible by bus.
Madison has a lot to offer with a thriving arts and music scene, plenty of shopping, award-winning restaurants and sporting events. It is a very bike-friendly city and offers the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities all year round. In winter you can keep fit with skiing and snowboarding, while in summer you can go hiking, sailing or swimming.
The white granite building of the Renaissance-style Capitol dominates the skyline. At the end of State Street is an observation deck with sweeping views of the City of Lakes.
The population is very creative, close to nature and has a high standard of education. The climate is pleasant, on average there are 187 sunny days per year.
