Financing options

In order to finance a semester abroad at the University of Technology Sydney, students can apply for foreign BAföG , among other things. This includes a subsidy towards tuition fees of up to EUR 4600 as well as support with living expenses, travel expenses and health insurance costs if individual entitlement to funding exists.

Requirements

In order to be able to take part in a semester abroad, you must have been enrolled at a university for at least one year.

In addition, international students must provide evidence of sufficient English language skills based on a minimum score in a standardized language test such as the IELTS or TOEFL. The DAAD language test is not recognized by the University of Technology Sydney.

This also includes an English grade of seven points in the advanced course in the Abitur and a certificate from the home university for the language courses taken.

Campus

The UTS campus is located in the hip Ultimo district, not far from the Central Business District, overlooking Sydney’s famous Darling Harbour. Due to its central location in the city center, it is well connected to local transport, but all university buildings are within easy walking distance.

In the five building complexes, students can quench their hunger and thirst in several cafes and restaurants, there is a hairdresser, an optician, the library and a copy shop, various shops and a bar.

The architecture of the UTS buildings is particularly striking. The center of the campus is probably the UTS Tower, built in the style of brutalism, which towers over the entire campus. But the wavy Vicki Sara Building and the Frank Gehry-designed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building of the UTS Business School also attract many onlookers with their unusual style.

The university city of Sydney

The city of Sydney in Australia proper has a population of about 170,000 excluding the surrounding areas and the inner city is bounded by the harbor and Circular Quay to the north, Macquarie Street to the east, Western Distributor to the west and Liverpool Street to the south.

It is the industrial, commercial and financial center of Australia and a major tourist attraction. The landmarks are the shell-shaped opera house, which according to the builder is supposed to be based on the unfolding of an orange, and the well-known harbor bridge, next to which the huge Royal Botanic Gardens are located.

You can easily explore the city center on foot, and in addition to the harbor area, the old town “The Rocks” with its warehouses on Sydney Cove is particularly worth seeing. The tallest building is the 305-meter Sydney Tower, which has an observation deck and offers a 360-degree view of the harbour. The entertainment center is the area around Darling Harbour, which can easily be traveled by monorail; there are restaurants, a Sega World Park, the Panasonic IMAX Theater, event venues with a changing program, the Chinese Garden, the Maritime Museum and the Sydney Aquarium, a maritime museum with glass-roofed tunnels.

Sydney is in the subtropical climate zone, but due to its proximity to the coast, it’s not overly hot. The annual average temperature is 17.4 °C, in winter the temperature almost never falls below 5 °C. The lowest temperature ever measured was 2.1 °C. This weather makes the beaches, especially the well-known Bondi Beach, particularly attractive for surfers and tourists.
