Portsmouth

Portsmouth has over 200,000 inhabitants in the county of Hampshire on England’s south coast. The extraordinary thing about the city is that it is mostly located on Portsea Island. After a drive of just 100 kilometers you can already reach the metropolis of London, with Portsmouth even having a higher population density than the capital.

Due to its unique island location, the city is the most important naval base in Europe: 50 percent of all ships of the Royal Navy are stationed here, including all aircraft carriers. Therefore, the Navy is also the largest employer. To this day, the city boasts the world’s largest and oldest dry dock still in operation. Only a narrow river separates the island from the mainland in the north. Portsdown Hill is also located here, from which you have a magnificent view over Portsmouth.

Part of the old town, Old Portsmouth, was formerly called Spice Island. Sailors came here to have fun in pubs and other establishments while on shore leave. Today the entertainment district with bars and clubs is mainly on Guildhall Walk south of the city center, but Gunwharf Quay to the west is also known for its nightlife. The city center is the main shopping area with large shopping centers and exclusive small shops.

Culturally, there are many options in Portsmouth, from theater to concerts to museum visits. The well-known author Charles Dickens (“Oliver Twist”, “David Copperfield”) was born in the city, and you can see his birthplace. Due to Portsmouth’s location by the sea, many water sports are practiced here, such as sailing and rowing. In general, most tourist attractions have something to do with naval history, such as the Historic Dockyard, the Blue Reef Aquarium or various museum ships.

Due to its seaside location, the city’s climate is relatively humid, but milder in terms of temperatures than the rest of the country.
