University of Otago
DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND
Brief information
Founded in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand’s oldest university. At first only three professors taught here, but over the years the range of courses has grown.
Today, students can earn an undergraduate or graduate degree in fields such as science, health sciences, humanities, and business. Alternatively, they have the opportunity to spend a semester in New Zealand, complete language courses or attend the Otago International School.
According to AbbreviationFinder, the University of Otago is one of only two medical schools in the country and its dentistry degree is the only one in New Zealand. Especially in the field of research, the university has been able to develop a very good reputation and has been awarded several times Voted the best university in the country in rankings.
The motto of the university, which also adorns the coat of arms, is “Sapere Aude!” , which means something like “Have the courage to use your own mind!” It is aimed directly at students who should actively engage in acquiring knowledge, i.e. their own further education.

The university city of Dunedin
Dunedin (meaning “city on the hill”) is located in the province of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It has around 120,000 inhabitants and is considered one of the four most important cities in New Zealand. Education is the largest industry, with two major universities and a number of high schools and colleges located here. Due to the many students who live here, the average age of the population is quite low.
The harbor and mountains surrounding Dunedin are the remains of an extinct volcano, while the hinterland consists of flat plains and other landforms. The numerous suburbs of the city extend up to here and along the coast. Because of these geographic features, the climate here is temperate, but can vary greatly within short distances.
The city has a lot to offer culturally, including the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Fortune Theatre, many choirs and orchestras, ballet performances etc. There are also many festivals throughout the year such as the Whare Flat Folk Festival in December and January, the University of Otago Capping Week in May or the Otago Festival of the Arts in October, held every other year.
In general, the range of leisure activities is geared towards the young urban population, i.e. the students. Many well-known bands have emerged from Dunedin’s music scene. The city is also a popular eco-tourism destination, home to seal and penguin colonies and the world’s only continental royal albatross colony.
