Campus
The University of Essex now has three campuses: the Colchester campus, the Southend campus and the East 15, Loughton campus, where the East 15 Acting School is located. The Southend site is based in the center of Southend-on-Sea. Some departments of the university also offer courses here.
Originally, however, the university was founded on the Colchester campus, which is considered the main campus. This is located in Wivenhoe Park and from here it is only 20 kilometers to England’s east coast.
The Colchester campus has even been portrayed by the well-known painter John Constable, as the site combines extensive green spaces with the typical architecture of the 1960s, but there is also a building from the 18th century to be found here. The picture is rounded off by two lakes on the site.
The Tuscan town of San Gimignano with its many towers and squares served as a model for the architecture. It is also interesting that the university is one of the few that still has a working paternoster elevator in operation. As a contrast to these buildings, one can see, for example, the modern Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall with over 1000 seats, which opened only a few years ago.

The college town of Colchester
The historic city of Colchester is located in the English county of Essex and has around 110,000 inhabitants. It is considered one of England’s fastest growing cities in terms of population and claims the title of Britain’s oldest city. It is only 100 kilometers to London, so that you can also experience the flair of the metropolis from here. London’s Stansted Airport is only 45 kilometers away. The Colchester area is one of the driest in England and has an oceanic climate.
Many buildings in Colchester are of Victorian origin and efforts are currently being made to be recognized as a World Heritage Site. The city has served as a garrison town since Roman times, and this has continued through history to this day. But Colchester also has a lot to offer culturally, for example museums such as the Castle Museum in Colchester Castle or the Natural History Museum, the Mercury Theatre, various live music stages and much more. You can also visit the Colchester Zoo.
