San Francisco

With a population of 740,000, San Francisco is the fourth largest city in the US state of California. It is located at the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula and is the center of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is the second most densely populated in the United States.

Known for its months of fog, the 43 steep hills within the city limits, the mix of Victorian and modern architecture, and the location surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

Well-known places in the city are the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the Cable Cars, the Transamerica Pyramid and Chinatown. In addition to Alcatraz, other islands also belong to the city area, including Treasure Island and neighboring Yerba Island. Some neighborhoods are named after the hill they’re on, like Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, or Telegraph Hill.

The climate in San Francisco is Mediterranean with mild winters and warm summers. The average annual temperatures vary between 10 °C and 17 °C.

A great way to spend free time is in the city’s largest and most famous park, Golden Gate Park, which stretches from the city center to the ocean. It is home to thousands of non-native trees and plants and has a number of attractions such as the Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden and the Strybing Arboretum. The city’s oldest park is Buena Vista Park, and a well-known museum is the Museum of Modern Art.
