Lakehead University, Canada, was founded in 1946 as the Lakehead Technical Institute. In 1965 it was then appointed to the university.

Financing options
If you would like to complete a semester abroad at Lakehead University, you have the opportunity to apply for foreign BAföG. Those who are entitled to funding receive financial support for living and travel expenses as well as for health insurance. The tuition fees are also subsidized, up to EUR 4600.
Requirements
In order to be accepted for a semester abroad at Lakehead University, international students must have a high school diploma. Applicants who are already enrolled at a university should have good academic achievements to date. At least the grade “70 percent” in the Canadian grading system is required, which in turn corresponds to about a 2.3 in the German grading system.
If you want to take postgraduate courses during the semester abroad, you must already be enrolled in a master’s degree at a university.
In addition, sufficient knowledge of English must be proven. This can be done via a standardized language test such as the TOEFL or IELTS or via a DAAD language test.

Campus
Lakehead University has two campuses. The main campus is in Thunder Bay, a city in the Canadian province of Ontario. The campus is located in the heart of the city, which is situated in a picturesque natural landscape. The campus is surrounded by fields and green spaces and many of the university buildings face Lake Tamblyn. The main buildings on the campus are connected by tunnels, so you can always get dry-shod from one building to the next. The Thunder Bay campus area is perfect for outdoor activities such as jogging, cycling and cross-country skiing in wintertime.
The courses on the Thunder Bay campus take place in the modern Advanced Technology and Academic Center. Here, for example, there are smart classrooms and a virtual reality lab. In addition to a large library, there are also many opportunities for leisure activities on campus. These include a café and various sports facilities such as a gym and a swimming pool.
Since 2006, Lakehead University has had another, smaller campus. Orillia campus is located far from Thunder Bay campus in the city of Orillia. One of the two locations in Orillia is in the historic center of the city.

Housing
International students at Lakehead University have both on- and off-campus residency options. There are various student halls of residence and apartments. Students in higher semesters can also move into the university’s townhouses off campus. There are also other options for renting accommodation off campus. Lakehead University can help with the search. It is also possible to stay with a host family. There are different accommodation options for students at the Thunderbay campus and students at the Orillia campus.

The college town of Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay in the province of Ontario in Canada is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Superior. The city sits at the foot of the Sleeping Giant, a rock formation famous in Canada. Home to around 120,000 people, it is the largest city in the Northwest Ontario region. In 2003, Thunder Bay was named the “Cultural Capital of Canada”.
Thunder Bay is surrounded by a fascinating natural landscape. The city itself offers various theaters and other cultural institutions, as well as many shops and restaurants. There are many other recreational opportunities inside and outside of Thunder Bay. If you like, you can sail or surf in summer and much more. In the cold season, winter sports enthusiasts get their money’s worth, because there are several ski areas in the area.
