The Semester at CSUN semester program enables its participants to freely select courses across semesters and departments from all university courses in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs offered at California State University Northridge for a period of one or two semesters. Under certain circumstances, you can have your achievements credited to your home university after consultation.

As the final authority, the professors on site decide on admission to the individual courses based on the available places in the courses and the individual previous knowledge of the applicants.

Financing options

One of several financing options for a semester abroad in the USA is the Auslands-BAföG. An application can be worthwhile, because eligible students will have part of the tuition fees (maximum EUR 4600) waived. There are also additional grants for travel expenses, health insurance and living expenses.

Requirements

Applicants for the Semester at CSUN Program must have a high school diploma and have a working knowledge of English. These are proven based on a minimum number of points in a standardized language test such as the IELTS or TOEFL. Alternatively, the DAAD test is also accepted.

In some cases, the CSUN can even waive an English test completely if students study partly in English. It is sufficient if at least two specialist courses in English have been taken and passed.

The language skills can be proven by one of the following test results or documents:

Campus

The campus of California State University Northridge, which is usually divided into a northern and a southern section for better understanding, is located in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles.

Among other things, it has a botanical garden and a historic orange grove from the 1920s. Also impressive is the huge Delmar T. Oviatt Library, which has everything a student needs to study.

Within half an hour you can be in Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios, on the Pacific Ocean beach, Santa Monica or in downtown LA. There are also various shops and restaurants on campus and in the surrounding area.

Northridge

Northridge has a population of 84,000 and is located in northwest California’s San Fernando Valley. There are several ways to spend your free time: The Northridge Fashion Center shopping mile has already made a name for itself nationwide, and those who prefer to do something in nature can visit the botanical gardens. If that’s not enough, you can simply make the approximately 35-kilometer trip to Los Angeles.

The beaches in the area (Malibu Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Venice Beach…) also offer great leisure and sports activities such as surfing, beach volleyball and much more.
