All About Camping Tent Rods

The rods are the “structure” of the tent. Without them, your tent will simply not stand!
They divided into various parts, connected by an elastic band that goes inside the set. Each tent model has a different mount: the rods can cross in the Middle, can cross twice, can be parallel, can pass within a channel or even be arrested for dead. (But, as there is a huge variety in the shapes of ride, we’ll discuss this in this article.)

Amount of Rods
The amount of rods depends on the model. A tent can have 1 to 5 Rails (or even more) – it all depends on size, purpose and complexity.

Size of rods
Whisk sizes also vary in each model, so the total length as each of the parties. In the same tent, can be sticks of different lengths, depending on the function of each stick.
In reviews of the FuiAcampar, we usually report the size of the rods when it is folded. This is important especially for people who enjoy traveling by bike or bike when the rods can become a nuisance if they are too long and do not fit in saddlebags.
Materials of rods
Most of the tents that is on sale in Brazil comes with fiberglass rods, aluminum or Duralumin, according to zipcodesexplorer.
Fiberglass
In a very simple way, we can say that the fiber rods are the most common, heavier, less expensive and that break more easily. Is the type of rod that comes in most non-technical tents.
Aluminum
The aluminum rods are found in technical tents, which are designed to withstand climatic situations more strong winds and storms. Rods are more resistant, lighter and more expensive than the fiber. Are typically found in tents for those who practice trekking or mountaineering and necessarily need a lighter and stronger equipment, which do not allow the adventurer in his hand. Some models have aluminum rods are the Bivak andQuickhiker.
Duralumin
There are still the rods in Duralumin, which is a material even more resistant than aluminum and with similar weight. Are used in a few models of technical tents here in Brazil, as Nepal and the tents of Manaslu.
Just out of curiosity: outside of Brazil, there are some brands working with carbon fiber rods, which is even lighter and more resistant. It may be that at some point this technology reaches the Brazilian tents!

How to mount the rods Correctly
As mentioned before, we’re not going to explain how to do the Assembly, as this varies in each model, but some tips are valid for almost all models and can prevent problems for your camping.
Attach the parts correctly
The rod is made of several parts together by a rubber band.Often, the time to assemble the tent, doing everything in a hurry, we didn’t realize that some part was not properly attached to each other. This generates extra tension on the fabric and stick (can break more easily).
Present sobreteto
In many models, the rods must be fastened to the room to keep the tent. And, after you set up the room, people tend to play the sobreteto above and already starting to put the espeques. However, most sobretetos have some strings at the bottom (inside) and it is wise to also arrest these strings to the rods. So, it is wise to put the sobreteto over, adjust the direction (the rods usually coincide with the seams) and “join” between the room and the sobreteto and hold these strings. This makes the stay more stable tent, especially in windy situations, causing the voltage is divided and everything to be in your place.
The fitting room eyelets
In the vast majority of the tents, the ends of the rods are a species of pins and their function is to be properly assembled to eyelets (argolinhas of metal) of the floor of the room. In no event will quit doing that, because that’s what will make your room with the floor properly stretched and the structure properly mounted.

What to do if the tent Rod Broke
Rods break, that’s true! Especially those of fiberglass, especially in windy situations, especially if the tent is not properly assembled and especially if the rods are not properly attached. But a damage on the rod is not the end of the world! Check out some tips below:
Rod breakage
As we mentioned before, it is almost normal for a fiberglass Rod break after a certain time of use. The breaks usually happen at the site where the rod fits together and the metal part is creaking with fiberglass, or when, after a period of constant pressure, the rod begins to crack.
There are some models of tents that to prevent this friction break the rod, have a metal part on both sides of the socket, so that the tension is metal-on-metal, not fiberglass. This shortens the chance of breaking the rod. A template that has these rods is the Quota 2.
Repair tube
Some models of tents come with a tube of repair that few people give ball or knows what it’s for. Is an aluminum tube that must be stuck on rod and slid to the location where is broken. It serves as a temporary patch that prevents a broken Rod pierce the fabric until you get change.
Duct tape Savior!
If your rod broke in the middle of the camp and you don’t have a repair tube, who will save your camp and your tent will be the Duct Tape! That you should always carry with you for any emergency. Abuse her giving twists and turns on the rod until it is firm enough to be used without drilling into the fabric of the tent.
Return the set of rods
Many tent models have sets of rods to purchase individual copies. A portion of your set of rods broke, verify that you cannot buy a new set, your tent model – this is the best solution. But stay tuned to the model of your tent, because each model has different lengths of rods and a larger size or smaller will not serve.
Return the broken part
In some stores, you can find a service that Exchange only the part that is broken, without having to buy a whole new set. This can be a good solution if your tent does not have the set of loose rods for sale. However, other parts of the rod that are at risk are likely to break soon. Is good before this Exchange, assess the State of the other parties: if she is already showing signs of wear in various parts, worth investing in a new set.
See the video below how to make the exchange of a broken part of the rod:
Deformation
All the rods must have a certain flexibility so that they do not break to set up camp. But the aluminum rods, can happen after a lot of time using the tent, the rods stay slightly sheeted (pies). This is not necessarily a problem, as it is a feature of this material.
Elastic breakup
Can also happen to the elastic joining parts of the rod break or grow old and feeble, losing your function. When it happens it breaks during a camp, the temporary solution is to unite the two parts with a node. Then, standing back to civilization, this elastic problem can be easily solved by buying a new elastic.
The new elastic to be purchased must be “tight”, so you can push it inside of the rods, and the diameter and the length should be similar to the original. When in doubt, take the original elastic damaged it in time to buy a new one.
To make the exchange of the elastic, take the broken out and put the new, starting in each of the parties. Stay tuned for the rods to be placed always and can fit into each other.
